Erdal Erzincan – Şelpe

14Oct09

Anatolian master baglama player Erdal Erzincan live in concert. Sadly, I don’t speak Turkish, but I can tell you that the baglama saz is usually played with a plectrum.  Erzincan has developed a distinctive finger style (called şelpe) which is on full display here.

Do you like tempo changes? I do.

Update 12/30/2009:

One more, courtesy of Metin (see comments).  Sublime!

Of interest is the new Baglama Method, Volume 1 and Volume 2 by Arif Sag and Erdal Erzincan.  These are available from Golden Horn Records and have text in English.  I’ve ordered Volume 1.  Unfortunately, my schedule being such as it is, it’s unclear when I’ll be able to dive in.  My impression is that it looks to be very well done.

You and me both. He has his own music school in Turkey.

That kind of tapping technique can veer into wankery, but I kind of dig it here. In small doses.

Beautiful playing, Metin! It really gets hot around 3:30. Nice job with The Godfather and Beverly Hills Cop, fun to play those on guitar too =)
