On The Edge – Derek Bailey and the BBC make a documentary about improvisation

08Dec09

Broadcast in 1992, On The Edge was a 4-part miniseries about improvisational music in all of its forms. Written by iconoclastic improv guitarist Derek Bailey and based on his seminal book Improvisation: Its Nature and Practice in Music, the program admirably includes everything from traditional Korean music to French Catholic liturgical organ performance to downtown New York free jazz.

Episodes 1 and 3 are available free from Ubuweb.

Update 2010/01/22: Episode 2 is here and it’s excellent.  Thanks to Volkan for the link!

If you know where to find Episode 4, please get in touch.
