Monsters of Azeri Guitar: Ramish, Rehman Memmedli & Elman Namazoglu
Ramish is a renowned performer of Azeri music on electric guitar:
Rehman Memmedli shreds on broadcast television. I love the guitar tone here – some fuzz and phaser kills in this context. His backing band sounds dark and moody:
Download Rehman Memmedli – “Bash Sari Tel” (5:27 min, 6.27 Mb mp3)
Elman Namazoglu in two jaw-dropping solo performances. Although the supporting tracks on his stuff can get pretty cheesy and overproduced, I really dig the oddly dissonant backing in this one. And yes, he is playing in front of a neon cobra, and that is insanely cool:
Please turn up the volume for this one:
Interesting to note that they all seem to be playing the same guitar!
UPDATE 3/18/2011: it looks like the Jolana Special. See the comment thread below…

I would love to know more about this music and it’s guitar too … I think the fuzz and other effects are built into the guitar, Remish’s guitar seems to have the most buttons and switches. Looks like the guitar might have been originally patterned after a Fender Coronado. Here’s another great clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL84SE-xVLM
Thanks for the killer link, Moti! I’ll be checking that out more carefully when I return from tour next week…
About those Azeri electric guitarists : They are playing JOLANA guitars which are Czech made. I figured maybe they had obtained them before “the wall went down” and they were the best available at the time, etc. However, I’m just guessing….

JOLANA P.S. I believe the effects are probably outboard with just control panels for them stuck on the guitars.

Here’s the skinny…
Many thanks for the information! I’ll check out those links now.
Good to see there’s more folks seeing the badassness of these players! Check out İntizar Flamenco too:

Somebody make him drop the Casios and hook him up with a psychedelic rockband!
Totally – Intizar is sick! I’ve been meaning to do a follow-up post and when I do I’ll include that first link. I’d love to hear that guy rip over a heavy rhythm section…
Rustem Quliyev … check out the nice tremolo bar action … sort of reminds me of John Cipollina a little bit. Looks like there are some extra frets tied on “saz style” in between the guitar’s standard frets.

Also, Aasif Agcabedi. A rebel on the scene with the black Les Paul style guitar

Moti – the Quliyev & Agcabedi videos are great! I was not aware of those players. Thank you!
And here’s yet another one on the firmament:
Birini də qitaranın öz səsi ilə çal az zırıldat
